Medicare Part A – Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A is often called hospital insurance which helps cover inpatient medical needs.

What Part A Covers

  • Inpatient care (when you’re admitted to the hospital)

  • Skilled nursing facility care (short-term recovery, not long-term care)

  • Hospice care

  • Home health care (certain services at home when medically necessary)

Costs of Part A

Your costs will include your premium and any deductibles, copays or coinsurance while using the plan.

In 2025: Premium
If you or your spouse worked 40 quarters (10 years) in the USA $0 per month
If you or your spouse worked between 30-39 quarters (7.5-10 years) in the USA $285 per month
If you or your spouse worked under 30 quarters (7.5 years) in the USA $518 per month

Part A - Inpatient Cost Sharing (updated for 2025)

Deductible $1,676 for each inpatient hospital stay
Inpatient Stay
  • Days 1-60: $0
  • Days 61-90: $419 copay each day
  • Days 91-150: $838 copay each day
  • After 150 days: You pay all costs
Lifetime reserve days can only be used once.
Skilled Nursing Facility Stay
  • Days 1-20: $0
  • Days 21-100: $209.50 copay each day
  • 101 days: You pay all costs

Original Medicare Alone Leaves Big Gaps

Original Medicare (Parts A and Part B) gives you a base layer of coverage, but it can still leave you paying a lot out-of-pocket. Hospital deductibles, coinsurance, and long hospital stays can add up quickly and Medicare doesn’t have a maximum limit!

That’s why many people choose additional coverage with either a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) or a Medicare Supplement plan. These plans can help limit surprise bills and give you more predictable costs.
